Did you know you Could Claim Your Pet as an Emotional Support Animal (ESA )? – How to Legally Register and Certify an ESA for Individuals Suffering from Mental Illness, Panic Attacks, Phobias, Anxiety, Autism, ADD, Depression or PTSD

When you come across a  way to help people with mental or emotional conditions it feels like the right thing to do is to share it with others.

This Emotional Support Animal (ESA) registration is legal, fast and easy and will help you in your ability to function normally on a daily basis.

In this article, we will dive into what it means to have an Emotional Support Animal, how you can go about qualifying for one, and how to “certify” an Emotional Support Animal. We will explain how to actually legitimately qualify your animal companion as an ESA.

ESA's provide emotional support and comfort that helps their owners deal with challenges that might otherwise compromise their quality of life...

So earlier this year we became proud "Puppy Raisers' for a Mobility Dog organisation - a charitable organisation who train Golden Retrievers and Labrador dogs to assist people in wheelchairs or who need assisted walking.

Our 9-year-old son had been 'begging' us to get him a dog.  He is an only-child and apart from wanting a 'buddy' to play with he kept saying he wanted a loyal friend to 'protect' him.

Over the years we have been noticing that, what started out as a mild anxiety was getting worse.  Like with most young kids, he had a fear of the dark but then gradually his anxiety expanded... he didn't want to go to shopping malls anymore and when we did manage to get him to come out he would constantly look over his shoulder to look for 'danger' and seemed to be stuck in a state of 'fight or flight'.

We discussed his anxiety with a medical professional but they didn't think it was 'intense' enough yet for psychiatric help but suggested we may like to try getting him a pet.  We were renting and not yet ready to commit to having a dog for the next 18 or so years, but whilst watching a documentary we found out about Mobility Dogs and how they were looking for puppy raisers.  It seemed like the perfect opportunity to have a pet but with a higher purpose even.   What an amazing opportunity for our son to learn  new skills, to understand social responsibility and have a pet at the same time so we decided to apply.  Luckily we had a very thoughtful and understanding landlord and armed with their letter of approval we qualified and welcomed our 8-week-old Golden Retriever puppy in to our family.

The change in our son's emotional wellbeing was almost immediate.  We did not realise that during its lifetime this little puppy would benefit people on so many levels... including our anxious little man.  One of the benefits of raising a service dog though, is that they get to come everywhere with you.  We are able to bring him to shopping centres, on public transport, in to cinemas, restaurants and even holiday accommodation.  This has had a dramatic impact on the mental wellbeing of our little guy.  He now has a whole new level of confidence, feels knowledgeable and purposeful and excited about life.

It got me thinking though.... we are so privileged to have the opportunity to raise this amazing little pup but what about people who don't qualify for a service dog but desperately need the emotional & mental support of a service animal to give them the confidence and support they need to live a normal and productive life?

So being the inquisitive person I am I decided to investigate what people's options are and uncovered some interesting information...

“Something that once caused me extreme stress is now just a trip with a trusted friend!"

Studies have shown that a technique called, Deep Pressure Therapy (DPT) can help calm those who suffer from anxiety, autism, self-harming behaviors and generalized stress without medication.

People With Service Animals Must Be Allowed Access To All Public Accommodations.

Most people don't realize they qualify to have a service animal or emotional support animal and no longer need to see a physician to get a prescription for it.

Most people don't know that federal laws trump any state laws regarding service animals.

To help alleviate the debilitating symptoms of mental and emotional disabilities, Americans can get approved to travel with and live with their lovable pets

Service dogs can be specially trained by their owner and do not require expensive professional training.

So what is an Emotional Support Animal?

An Emotional Support Animal (ESA) animal is an animal that can provide emotional and therapeutic benefit to those suffering with emotional issues, anxiety or psychiatric problems.

This means that the animal can be allowed legal access to all public places and amenities you visit, without limitations, extra fees, or penalties.

In order to benefit from the federal law protection under the United States a person must have a note from a licensed mental health counselor stating the person has a condition and the animal provides emotional support benefiting the person with the disability. The animal doesn’t need specific working abilities to become an emotional support animal.

What conditions may qualify for an ESA Letter?

The benefits of an ESA are many; they include calming and relaxing, lowering anxiety, alleviating loneliness, enhancing social engagement and interaction, normalizing heart rate and blood pressure, reducing pain, reducing stress, reducing depression and increasing pleasure

How to know if you need an emotional support animal:

  • You Have a Mental Health Issue:
Mental illness or mental health disorders are a wide range of conditions affecting mental health. Mental disorders affect mood, thinking, and behavior of individuals. Many mental disorders can significantly interfere with the ability to function normally, work, study, or maintain quality of life, affecting the quality of life.  Emotional Support Animals can be used as part of a treatment plan for certain mental health issues where companionship and affection can help provide some form of relief and healing
  • You Have Depression or PTSD Symptoms:
More often than not, depression is hard to catch on your own. The same case applies to post-traumatic disorder. But these mental health issues are real killers of mood, positivity, and healthy living.
Emotional support animals can help recondition your mind and pump positive energy into you. They are natural stress relievers and can help reduce some of these symptoms.
  • You Show Signs of OCD
Short for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, OCD signs can indicate the need for an emotional support animal. Most people with OCD show signs such as an obsession for keeping things organized, clean, and orderly. Some will be constantly worried in excess about their loved ones, checking on them all the time. Others are obsessed about the locks, switches, and other little things critical in guaranteeing their security. If you show such signs, it could be an indication that you need an ESA. However, this mostly comes after medical treatment for the condition, so you don’t revert back to the obsessive state.
  • Your Mind is Aging
As they get older, some people experience a decline in their mental capabilities. This is known as cognitive decline, where memory may become less effective, and concentrating on mental tasks gradually turns into a nightmare. Some people naturally find it harder to control their emotions in their prime years. An ESA letter might be approved for you if you are getting older and experiencing such symptoms.
  • Bouts of Extreme Loneliness
Having a mental health illness or disability is one thing, but recovering and coping is an entirely different thing without a reliable social support system. Even if your loved ones are there to support you, they may not always be around to comfort and console you. One thing with animals is that they will never abandon you or go behind your back. Once they are loyal, it remains so until the end.

Mental health issues are no joke. Sometimes they are accompanied or related to physical health issues and disabilities. Especially for the latter, an ESA can help comfort and console you while keeping you company. They can help improve your life in more ways than you can imagine.

Is It Difficult To Obtain an ESA Letter?

There's a lot of mixed information and scams out there. Unfortunately, many websites claim to register your pet as a support animal but you're left with the hassle, stress, and embarrassment of being interrogated because not everyone knows how to check these registers. Some websites make you dig up proof of a disability or doctors notes. Others provide a fake cheap non-refundable $30 letter that can't be used because it's not doctor-approved or from an official organization. They'll also try to tell you that you need stuff you don't, like badges and starter kit. So don't be fooled…

I did some research and grunt work for you and found an organisation whom make it easy to complete the process legitimately. All you need is to complete a free survey to see if you qualify and once submitted, only then do you decide if you want to pay a small fee (which will save you major money in the long run) to have one of a certified doctor review it so you can receive your official approval letter and have the important support of your pet—without anxiety-provoking questions.

But don’t take my word for it… see what others have to say about the service:

I appreciate that the questionnaire isn't asking things that could set anxiety off. It's also super easy to use and a must for those who need a esa and are looking for an apartment. Many don't want you to have pets but sometimes the pet is all that we have that can make the difference on a bad day.

If being with your pet brings a smile to your face and keeps you calm in difficult times and situations, then you should be able to take him or her with you wherever you go

My Verdict:

From personal experience I know how life-changing a dog can be in relieving stress, gaining confidence and giving a new lease on life.  My 9-year-old son is proof of that.
For us being unable to have a 'full-time' pet turned out to be a blessing in disguise... we looked at alternative options and by volunteering to become puppy raisers for a service dog organisation with the intention of contributing to the life of someone in a wheelchair we ended up changing the life or our son and our family for the better too.

My wish for others who suffer from debilitating anxiety, depression or other mental challenges is to find comfort and a new lease on their life by being able to keep their trusted fur companion with them wherever they go.
